British Columbia (BC) is on the cusp of an eco-friendly revolution in its public transport sector. The region is preparing for a significant update to its fleet with the addition of new electric buses that promise a cleaner, greener future for its communities.
Electric Buses and Infrastructure Projects Kick-starting Across BC
Nova Bus and New Flyer, two renowned suppliers have received orders for a whopping total of sixty-six electric buses. Beyond the buses themselves, there’s also exciting development on the infrastructure side. Nine forward-thinking communities within BC are set to see the launch of transit electrification infrastructure projects.
Charging Ahead with New Infrastructure
There’s an aggressive timeline in place for this electric transition, with the goal to put in place about 134 electric bus charging points in various BC locales over the coming 24 months. The communities on the roadmap for this ecological makeover include Chilliwack, Kamloops, Kelowna, as well as in the Regional District of Nanaimo, Nelson, Powell River, Sunshine Coast, Victoria, and Whistler. As these projects move forward, specific bus allocations will become clearer.
Electric Bus Fleet Rollout Timeline
Transitioning to a fully electric fleet takes careful planning and execution. BC Transit has outlined a gradual introduction of the 66 electric buses, projecting the start of their arrival in early 2025 and aiming for completion by mid-2026. And this is only part of a larger scheme—there is a plan to procure additional electric buses with future funding tranches yet to be detailed.
Significant Funding Injection for Green Transit Initiatives
With a hefty sum of $395.5 million dedicated to buses and related infrastructure, announced as recently as July 2023, there’s a strong financial backbone supporting the transit electrification. This amount is pooled from various levels of government—the Government of Canada, the Province of British Columbia, and local government partners. A total procurement target of 115 new battery electric buses is set, under the auspices of this collective investment.
Government Support Fuels the Charge towards Zero Emissions
The Canadian government’s commitment to a sustainable future is evidenced through its provision of funds via the Zero Emission Transit Fund and the Public Transit Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. This backing underscores the alignment of BC Transit’s efforts with the national agenda for emission reduction.
By embarking on these projects, BC Transit is not only working towards reducing their greenhouse gas emissions but also aligning with the broader objectives of the Province of British Columbia’s CleanBC roadmap.
