First Solar Launches India’s First Fully Integrated Solar Plant

First Solar, a leader in photovoltaic innovation, has announced an impressive milestone with the initiation of construction on India’s pioneering fully integrated solar manufacturing facility.

Boosting Local Economy and Innovation in Tamil Nadu

Strategically located in Tamil Nadu, this state-of-the-art factory boasts an impressive annual production capability of 3.3 gigawatts and is set to offer employment to approximately 1,000 individuals. The Series 7 solar panels, which are tailored for the Indian climate, will be produced here utilizing technology designed in First Solar’s American R&D facilities.

Setting New Standards in Sustainable Production

A distinction that sets this facility apart is its environmentally conscious operations, including the inception of India’s premiere solar panel recycling unit. The factory is poised to set a global standard as the first net-zero water withdrawal solar manufacturing site, an essential feature given its location in a region with significant water stress challenges.

From an ecological perspective, the facility is a paragon of sustainability, with its entire water supply coming from tertiary-treated recycled water, thereby ensuring zero wastage and no discharge into the environment.

Global Expansion and Local Impact

First Solar, headquartered in Tempe, Arizona, is expanding its reach with this being the sixth operational plant, joining the company’s manufacturing presence across the United States, Malaysia, and Vietnam.

Substantial International Support and Financing

A notable enabler of this project is the US International Development Finance Corporation, providing a significant portion of the funding required. With an investment of $500 million, the DFC underscores the collaborative effort between the United States and India to bolster sustainable energy initiatives and strengthen bilateral economic growth.

“The United States is leveraging American innovation and technology to diversify critical energy supply chains around the world and drive economic growth in India,” Scott Nathan, CEO of the DFC remarked.

First Solar’s Expansion Blueprint and Global Position

The Indian plant comes as part of First Solar’s ambitious $4.1 billion expansion strategy. Since 2020, the company has seen a substantial growth in operations – with a dramatic increase from 6 GW to over 16 GW of annual nameplate capacity as of the end of 2023. Additionally, First Solar has been advancing its influence within the US, with a 0.9 GW expansion in Ohio and plans for new facilities in Alabama and Louisiana, each projected to contribute an additional 3.5 GW.

Looking ahead, First Solar’s vision encompasses a robust global manufacturing presence, aspiring to reach 25 GW of annual nameplate capacity by 2026, further cementing its position as a major player in the renewable energy industry.
