A milestone in renewable energy was marked as New York’s South Fork Wind Farm, the first utility-scale offshore wind farm in the US’s federal waters, has successfully erected its final turbine. This groundbreaking achievement signals a momentous leap towards embracing clean energy alternatives.

Project Developers Announce Installation Milestone

According to industry news portal Renews, a spokesperson from South Fork Wind shared exciting news that the wind farm’s installation is now complete and the commissioning phase is in process. The final objectives include achieving full operational power for the entire facility. For more detail on this significant progress, refer to the official report.

Partnership of Energy Titans

The 132-megawatt South Fork Wind project is a joint venture between Ørsted, a leader in renewable energy from Denmark, and Eversource, a major energy provider based in Boston. Achieving 50% completion on January 18 meant that half of the 12 SG 11-200 DD Siemens Gamesa turbines were up and operational. The journey of the last turbine began recently from the State Pier in New London, Connecticut, a monumental occasion shared via Twitter:

#SouthForkWind celebrated the departure of its final turbine for installation. This pivotal moment brings us closer to #BuildingSouthFork to its completion.

From Installation to Power Generation

The journey of South Fork Wind Farm began with the installation of its first offshore wind turbine foundation in late June 2023, followed by the completion of the first US-built offshore substation in July. December marked a landmark moment as the wind farm produced its first power, connecting to the grid.

Impressive Impact and Clean Energy Provision

Once fully operational, South Fork Wind Farm is expected to generate sufficient energy to power approximately 70,000 homes in Long Island, aligning with New York’s ambitious goals to nurture a sustainable environment. The transmission of clean energy to the East Hampton electric grid initiated last March, an effort cemented through a 20-year agreement with the Long Island Power Authority.

Moreover, South Fork Wind Farm promises to substantially reduce carbon emissions – projected to eliminate up to 6 million tons, tantamount to removing 60,000 cars from the roads annually for a span of 25 years. This significant environmental impact reaffirms the shift towards renewable energy sources and sustainable practices.
