Scheduled to start its material journey in 2025, this influx of high-grade synthetic graphite will play a crucial role in serving Panasonic Energy’s electric vehicle battery production needs in the U.S. This strategic connection stems from NOVONIX’s operations in Tennessee and aligns impeccably with Panasonic Energy’s future-oriented strategy, targeting a remarkable 50% reduction in the carbon footprint of their lithium-ion battery supply chain for EVs by 2031 when juxtaposed with levels recorded in 2022.

Panasonic Energy’s environmental strategy doesn’t halt with its manufacturing processes—achieving carbon neutrality across all factories—but takes a holistic approach by also addressing the environmental impact within its upstream supply chain. Signing this agreement with NOVONIX is forecast to propel Panasonic Energy towards achieving the ambitious 50% carbon reduction, with a commitment to procure 10,000 tons of graphite over four years, a strategic move hailed for its environmental advantages.

The lithium-ion battery world is acquainted with two graphite varieties: natural and synthetic. The latter, favored for bolstering battery life and consistent performance through countless charge cycles, faces production challenges. Traditional high-temperature methods in Acheson furnaces—demanding a prodigious 30 days per cycle—pose hindrances due to substantial energy demands and the unfavorable CO2 emissions they produce.
