First unveiled at the Japan Mobility Show, Project X by the MIH Consortium, backed by Foxconn, introduces a groundbreaking concept: an electric car that incorporates Gogoro’s swappable batteries. This innovation has already revolutionized the electric scooter market, with over a million units utilising these batteries.
Why the Swappable Battery Concept May Play a Key Role in the Future of EVs
The concept of a battery-swapping system has been widely discussed whenever a new Gogoro scooter is unveiled or the company’s battery-swapping network expands. Many believe this approach would be ideal for small electric cars. Access to easy battery switching would be particularly beneficial for city residents living in apartments without easy access to EV charging stations. Instead of hunting for a charging spot and waiting hours for charging, users could switch out batteries quickly, reminiscent of an oversized power drill.
Diving Deeper into the Project X’s Design
Addressing the need for convenient, speedy battery swapping, Project X envisions a compact electric car powered by the same Gogoro batteries that are used in countless electric scooter battery swaps every day. The design includes a capacity for at least two Gogoro batteries, although it is speculated that a heavier vehicle like a car may need at least four batteries. The proposed battery-swapping system aims to render EV driving range concerns obsolete since users could easily swap batteries throughout a journey.
Flexible Vehicle Customization from Project X
The vehicle also promises flexibility in terms of autonomous driving levels (from Level 2 to Level 4) as well as adaptable internal layouts. Users could choose from a two or three-seater configuration to better fit their needs, with the two-seater allowing extra space for cargo.
