RWE, a leading energy company, is making significant strides in its “Growing Green Strategy” with its recent advancement in the U.S. renewable energy sector. The introduction of highly anticipated battery energy storage systems (BESS) has augmented RWE’s portfolio, featuring the completion of three new systems with a total capacity of 190 MW (361 MWh), and further developments under construction that will provide 770 MW (2280 MWh).

Expansion of BESS in RWE’s Portfolio

The addition of Bright Arrow, Big Star, and Mesquite 4 BESS has pushed RWE’s U.S. battery storage capacity to approximately 512 MW (1370 MWh). Most notably, BESS now makes up over a third of RWE’s 36 GW pipeline in the U.S, which also includes onshore wind and solar projects. On a global scale, RWE boasts a battery storage capacity of around 700 MW, and it doesn’t stop there – with more than 1 GW of battery storage projects still in the pipeline.

RWE’s Commitment to the U.S. Energy Grid

Andrew Flanagan, CEO of RWE Clean Energy, emphasizes the increasingly pivotal role of battery storage. With its ability to stabilize power grids and match electric supply with soaring demand, RWE pledges to increase its global battery portfolio to 6 gigawatts by the year 2030.

The Role of New BESS Facilities

Battery energy storage systems are becoming indispensable allies for renewable projects, ensuring electricity is available precisely when it’s needed. The three newly operational BESS units are conjoined with solar facilities, enabling the storage of surplus electricity to be fed back into the grid at optimal times. The Bright Arrow, Big Star, and Mesquite 4 play a significant part in this sustainable ecosystem.

  • Bright Arrow: Accompanies a 300 MWac solar PV project in Sulphur Springs, Texas, with projected additional solar capacity and market participation anticipated by Spring 2024.
  • Big Star: Intertwined with a 200 MWac solar PV project in Bastrop County, Texas, ready to start operating commercially in March 2024.
  • Mesquite 4: Paired with a 52.5 MWac solar project in Arizona, set to contribute to the Mesquite Complex’s vast capacity of approximately 530 MWac.

Technical Proficiency and Market Integration

RWE has harnessed its extensive technical expertise in battery energy storage to create safe, high-performing, and reliable assets. The company not only operates these assets with precision but also optimizes their value through strategic market engagement and proprietary algorithms.

Global Ambitions for Battery Storage

RWE is not just focused on the U.S. but is driving the energy transition across Europe and Australia as well. Their ambitious roadmap includes achieving 6 GW in battery storage worldwide by the end of 2030. Recent highlights include the commissioning of systems in Lingen and Werne, acquisition of UK-based JBM Solar, and pioneering combined solar plus storage plants in Germany. Moreover, RWE is setting examples with its large-scale battery storage system in operation in California, paired with a 150 MWac solar PV array at the Fifth Standard complex.

The company’s commitment to innovation and sustainability is evident as it continues to bolster its presence in the renewable energy landscape and contribute to a greener future.
