Sustainable Goals on Ice: Schneider Electric Powers Up Green Initiatives in Women’s Hockey League

A Greener Future for Professional Women's Hockey

In a significant step toward a more sustainable future for sports, Schneider Electric has teamed up with the Professional Women’s Hockey League to carve out a path toward reducing their environmental impact.

Forging a Partnership for Change

Schneider Electric, recognized for spearheading the digital revolution in energy management and automation, is now bringing its expertise to the rink. The company’s new collaboration with the Professional Women’s Hockey League (PWHL) sees it becoming the league’s official partner for energy management. With a focus on eco-friendly practices, Schneider Electric will evaluate the league’s current operations and provide comprehensive guidance on achieving a smaller carbon footprint—a crucial step for the PWHL to become an emblem of sustainability in the sporting world.

Shared Values for a Sustainable Vision

“Environmental stewardship and positive societal impact are core values shared between the PWHL and Schneider Electric,” remarks Emily Heitman, Country President of Schneider Electric Canada. “We’re thrilled to lend our top-tier energy management skills and innovative solutions to help them meet their environmental objectives.”

Aligning with Global Goals

The partnership aligns seamlessly with the principles of the Sport and Climate Action Framework, which derive from the broader commitments of the Paris Agreement. All sports entities, according to the framework, should actively work to gauge, curtail, and transparently report their carbon emissions. Furthermore, the sports community is encouraged to leverage its platform to promote climate consciousness and drive actionable change among citizens worldwide.

The League’s Expansive Reach

The PWHL boasts a wide-spanning presence, with six teams that grace both Canadian and American ice – Toronto, Ottawa, and Montreal to the north, with New York, Minnesota, and Boston representing the league stateside. With fanfare and anticipation, the league launched its first season in January 2024, marking a new era for women’s hockey in North America.

A Proud Moment for Sustainability in Sports

Gabe Smith, Vice President of the Global Sustainability Business at Schneider Electric, shares his enthusiasm, “It’s a proud milestone to be North America’s energy management partner for such an influential league. Our collaboration in crafting a sustainability roadmap not only aims to revamp the hockey industry’s environmental approach, but it also sets a precedent, encouraging other sports leagues to join the green transition.”

As the PWHL skates towards a sustainable future, Schneider Electric’s role in redefining how sports leagues address their environmental responsibilities remains pivotal. Together, they stand united, not just in the love of the game, but in their commitment to preserving our planet for future generations.
