Perched at an impressive 4,650 meters above sea level, the construction of the 100-MW capacity wind farm in the Seni District marks a new era for renewable energy projects in terms of altitude and aspirations. It surpasses the typical thresholds of 3,500 to 5,500 meters that usually define ultra-high wind farms, making it a pioneer in the industry.

Devised by CHN Energy, the ambition behind this project goes beyond immediate energy needs. Even as it stands in service of scientific progress, the farm simultaneously breathes life into the homes of 140,000 households throughout Nagqu City with its clean, sustainable energy.

To triumph over the intense weather that typifies Tibet—from piercing sunshine and blistering winds to biting cold and blinding snow—each turbine within the farm is crafted to be unyielding. These machines endure not only the fierce elements but also the rapid temperature fluctuations that come with such a vast and variable environment.

Smart Technologies Leading the Way

A revelation from Hu Jiansheng, the visionary at the helm of the project, unveils the wind farm’s reliance on a cutting-edge intelligent wind power platform. He points out that through advanced stability control technologies, they’ve shrewdly navigated the challenges posed by the ultra-high altitude. These include optimizing inefficient wind energy conversion and ensuring the steady rotation of the turbine blades.

Longer blades have been installed, deftly engineered to maximize the area they sweep, thus adjudicating for the atmospheric pressure’s lack of density at such staggering heights. The painting technique developed for this project symbolizes innovation, as it protects the structures’ surfaces from becoming brittle under the relentless UV exposure, thereby prolonging the lifespan of the wind turbines.

A Feat of Construction at the Roof of the World

With an investment of $90.3 million, the farm’s construction was a race against time and terrain, completed in approximately 260 days. Spanning 140,000 square meters, its 25 robust turbines have been meticulously placed to harness the power of the wind. The annual output is predicted to reach around 200 million kWh—enough to cut down carbon dioxide emissions by an impressive 160,000 tons, thus charting a course for a cleaner, greener future.
