A Smart Power Shift with Impactful Savings

A partnership with Energy Vault has resulted in an impressive 220 MW/440 MWh grid-integrated storage system, strategically located about 50 miles from the sparkling city of Las Vegas in Moapa, Nevada. Not only does Energy Vault spearhead this innovative project, but they also enhance the stability of our power grids by pledging ongoing system maintenance.

Embracing Renewable Energy with Strategic Storage

This state-of-the-art battery system is designed to effectively capture and distribute the abundant solar and wind energy that often gets lost due to timing. It operates on a bi-daily cycle, charging with excess energy and releasing it during high-demand evening times. This ensures the smart use of renewables when our communities need them most—between the crucial hours of 5 pm and 9 pm.

Financial Transparency and Significant Savings

With eloquence and clarity, NV Energy’s CEO Dough Cannon elucidated the economical advantage of this new system to KTNV, a local TV network. He highlighted that, historically, the company had to source energy externally at a steep price during peak hours, which can reach up to $250 per unit. In stark contrast, the new BESS provides the same energy at a fraction of that cost — around $100 per unit.

A Greener, More Economical Future

The financial blueprint behind this project is as innovative as its technology. The Inflation Reduction Act has generously subsidized 40% of the BESS’s $250 million expense. Cannon foresees this modern energy infrastructure ushering in an era of economic relief, as NV Energy patrons could witness a substantial 15-20% bill reduction by the end of 2024.

Marrying environmental stewardship with fiscal responsibility, NV Energy’s move to convert a former coal plant into a beacon of clean energy storage sets a benchmark for others to follow.
