One of the shining beacons of the tech industry, Amazon Web Services (AWS), is set to write a new chapter in its operations as it integrates nuclear power to energize its data centers. AWS’s latest acquisition involves a massive data center campus, which is uniquely backed by a formidable 2.5 gigawatt (GW) nuclear energy facility. This strategic move is not just about enhancing AWS’s infrastructure but also about committing to sustainable energy sources.

The Salem Township Nuclear-Powered Data Center

The transition to a mega 960-megawatt (MW) data center under AWS’s expansive wing is taking place within the quaint Salem Township in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. Here, the data center’s power needs will be met by the adjacent Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, which is the sixth-largest nuclear power plant in the US. Sold by Talen Energy for a staggering $650 million, the Cumulus Data Assets campus sprawls over 1,200 acres, promising AWS a significant operational expansion.

A Tale of Powerful Synergies

The nuclear station in question isn’t a new player on the block. Since its inception in 1983, the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station has been a source of robust energy, operating two General Electric boiling water reactors within its secure walls. These reactors are not only successful in their current operation, providing around 63 million kilowatt-hours daily, but they are also set for the future with licenses extending well into the 2040s.

The Strategic Energy Agreement with Amazon

In a bold move that marries renewable energy and technology, Talen Energy has agreed to furnish AWS’s data center with consistent nuclear power. The plan, revealed through Talen Energy’s investor documentation, features escalations in power supply that will increase in 120 MW stages over a set period. AWS also holds the power, literally, to cap their consumption at 480 MW if needed and the option to renew their agreement coinciding with the extension of the nuclear plant’s licenses.

The Debate Around Nuclear Power for Net Zero

While nuclear energy is sometimes met with skepticism, AWS’s decision to utilize it as a part of its energy mix signals a pragmatic approach to achieving net zero goals. The tech titan’s move embraces an existing, already operational power source, providing 100% clean energy to support its high-demand cloud services. The seamless transition is likely to set a precedent in the tech industry, merging digital infrastructure with clean, uninterrupted, and reliable power.
