The U.S. Department of Energy is leading the charge in community-driven clean energy innovation, having recently unveiled 23 teams as victors of the CONCEPT Phase in the American-Made Community Energy Innovation Prize. These teams, chosen for their innovative projects within the Clean Energy and Manufacturing Ecosystem categories, are now poised to receive a $100,000 infusion. This significant monetary support, coupled with expert mentorship and additional resources, seeks to catalyze the next stages of their community-focused initiatives.
The Vision Behind the Community Energy Innovation Prize
The prize is not just about financial support; it’s a commitment to fostering equity through the Justice40 Initiative, a governmental effort to aid disadvantaged communities in the spheres of clean energy and climate resilience. The initiative underscores three differentiated tracks: Collegiate, Clean Energy Ecosystem, and Manufacturing Ecosystem, each tailored with unique objectives and eligibility criteria. Following suit, the Collegiate Track winners were spotlighted in December of the previous year.
Unleashing Local Potential with DOE Support
Jeff Marootian, Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, emphasized the profound impact of local leadership in energy transitions. Acknowledging the financial hurdles that disproportionately burdened communities face, Marootian praised the prizewinners’ ingenious and thoughtful impact plans. The support offered through this prize is expected to catalyze meaningful change and drive community-led energy solutions.

Teams in the CONCEPT Phase had the task of charting their intended paths by outlining robust impact plans. The Clean Energy Ecosystem contenders focused on diverse initiatives such as workforce training, community educational outreach, and clean energy technology deployment. The Manufacturing Ecosystem hopefuls, on the other hand, ideated around themes of educational advancement, entrepreneurial growth, supply chain resiliency, and more, with a mandate to center their proposals around the upliftment of underserved communities.
Spotlight on the Ecosystem Track CONCEPT Phase Champions
The teams chosen from the Clean Energy Ecosystem Track embody diverse interventions from renewable energy collaborations to education and energy security projects across several states and Puerto Rico. Similarly, the Manufacturing Ecosystem Track winners range from clean technology networks to innovative metal initiatives and beyond, spanning numerous locales nationwide. These selected teams have shown a unique dedication to community empowerment and sustainability.
As these teams advance to the PROGRESS Phase, they are set to transform their impact plans into tangible community projects. By July 2024, their progress will be evaluated, and those teams demonstrating significant achievements will be eligible for further prize money and mentorship opportunities. Culminating in the IMPACT Phase, they will showcase their full-grown project results by December 2024.
