The Autopax Air EV Yetu is an intriguing car that marks an exciting development for Kenya. This vehicle, which is actually a rebadged Wuling Air created through collaboration with SAIC-GM-Wuling, will soon be assembled in Thika, near Nairobi. The name “Yetu” comes from the Swahili language, meaning “Ours,” symbolizing the car’s significance to the Kenyan people. This collaboration is a significant step towards accelerating the adoption of electric vehicles in Kenya.

Two Models, Two Options

In Kenya, the Autopax Air EV Yetu will be offered in two different models. The first is a standard range model equipped with a 17.3 kWh battery, offering a range of 200 km. The second is a long range model featuring a 26.7 kWh battery, capable of covering up to 300 km on a single charge. However, the real breakthrough lies in the fact that these vehicles will be assembled at an existing plant in Kenya, contributing to the growth of the local automotive industry.

A Catalyst for Capacity Utilization

Many vehicle assembly plants across Africa currently operate below their full potential. Collaborations like this between Autopax and Wuling will help increase capacity utilization, paving the way for more affordable vehicles to be offered in the market. By encouraging the local assembly rather than the importation of fully built units, governments in many African countries have introduced incentives and lower import duties, thus stimulating the growth of the automotive industry.

Expanding the Possibilities: The Wuling Bingo

Looking beyond the Autopax Air EV Yetu, there is potential for further expansion. For example, if the assembly of the Wuling Air proves successful in Kenya, it is possible that the existing relationship could extend to the Wuling Bingo. This larger and more visually appealing 5-door vehicle could attract a wider range of customers, including young families, early career professionals, and ride-hailing app drivers. Recently launched in China, the Wuling Bingo comes in black, white, green, and pink color options, offering dimensions of 3950/1708/1580 mm and a wheelbase of 2560 mm. With motor options of 30 kW (41 hp) and 50 kW (68 hp), the Bingo is available in two versions with a range of 203-333 km, depending on the 17.3 kWh or 31.9 kWh battery.

Unlocking the Potential: Towards Full Manufacturing

With a strong start from the Autopax Air EV Yetu, the possibilities for small electric vehicle assembly in Africa are promising. As the industry grows, it may eventually evolve into full-scale manufacturing, bringing significant benefits to countries across the continent. This includes job creation, technology transfer, and environmental sustainability. The future looks bright for electric vehicles in Africa, and the Autopax Air EV Yetu is just the beginning.
