Virginia is brightening its renewable energy prospects with the authorization of multiple new solar projects aimed at amping up the clean energy produced in the state. This move represents a significant step in Virginia’s commitment to advancing its sustainable energy initiatives.
Impressive Solar Expansion Approved
The Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) has recently given the green light to an impressive collection of 17 solar farm endeavors. These projects collectively have the capability to churn out a hefty 764 megawatts (MW) of clean energy. The result? A substantial bolstering of the clean energy capacity for Dominion Energy Virginia, known as the torchbearer for utility services in the state.
Dominion Energy, which currently holds the title for the nation’s second-largest solar fleet, is set to either own outrightly or pursue acquisitions spanning four solar farms with a cumulative 329 MW capacity. Moreover, the energy behemoth has inked a series of power-purchase agreements (PPAs) with 13 independently owned solar developments. Together, these PPAs account for an additional 435 MW.
When we talk about impact, these developments are no small fry. At their peak, they could supply around 200,000 homes with power – a clear testament to the substantial reach of these solar projects.
Details on the Approved Solar Projects
The Dominion-owned solar farms slated for construction include the 57 MW Beldale Solar in Powhatan County, the 95 MW Blue Ridge Solar in Pittsylvania County, the 127 MW Bookers Mill Solar in Richmond County, and the 50 MW Michaux Solar spanning Henry and Pittsylvania counties.
The rollout of these projects is more than just an environmental win; it’s an economic boon too. The creation of these solar farms is anticipated to propel over 1,600 job opportunities and generate economic benefits surpassing $570 million throughout the state of Virginia. By the target completion year of 2026, these renewable sources of energy will be set to go live.
Dominion’s Growing Solar Capacity
Once the dust settles and the solar farms are up and running, Dominion Energy’s solar capacity within Virginia is expected to exceed 4.6 gigawatts (GW). This impressive figure equates to the power needs of over 1.1 million homes when production is maxed out. For perspective, Dominion Energy already furnishes power to upwards of 2.5 million homes and businesses across the state.
Ed Baine, the President of Dominion Energy Virginia, remarked upon the state’s strides in clean energy, noting the diverse investment in safer energy alternatives such as offshore wind, battery storage, and, of course, solar power, which collectively underscore Virginia’s dedication to a cleaner energy future.
Virginia’s Solar Rankings and Energy Composition
The Solar Energy Industries Association has shed light on Virginia’s standing in the national solar arena, ranking it at an impressive 11th place for installed solar capacity. Predictions suggest that with continued progress, Virginia could climb up two spots to number nine in the next half-decade. As it stands, solar energy accounts for 6.56% of Virginia’s total electricity usage. However, despite the rapid growth in renewable sources, coal and natural gas remain the state’s top contributors to net electricity generation as of December 2023.
